Oregon Regions
For social sciences, we spent a lot of time studying the different regions of of Oregon. Of Oregon's four regions, the coast was one of my favorites. On the coast, there was the fish cannery, the fishing industry and the sand dunes.

Culture

Throughout the year, we studied different cultures and people around the world. The cultural project I am going to write about is the Nicaraguan New Year celebration. Like here in the United States, celebrations begin December 31. However, there are some differences.

One popular tradition, is to buy an old doll and fireworks. The doll is loaded with fireworks and then it is lit on fire. This is supposed to symbolize getting rid of the old and welcoming the new.

Rocks and Minerals

In science, one of the more exiciting things we studies were rocks and minerals. We studied rocks and minerals for a couple of months. During this time, we have learned several things.

One of the more interesting investigations we did was Mohs' Hardness Test. This is one test geologists use to determine what kind of mineral they have discovered.

Another interesting investigation were the videos on the different kinds of rocks. Here we also used computers to guide our research.
Rocks for Kids and Rock Hounds were two websites that were very helpful.

Here is a video that summarizes a lot of our activities and the different things we learned.
